BFR AMMUNITION QUESTIONS

The only safe and Magnum Research recommended ammunition to fire in our BFR revolvers is the caliber that is marked on the revolver OR it’s extra cylinder if so equipped. It is extremely dangerous to fire the wrong caliber ammunition in any firearm. Less than satisfactory accuracy and performance will often result as well. Simply because a cartridge may “fit” into a chamber does not mean it is safe to fire.

THE ONLY MRI AUTHORIZED AND TESTED EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE ARE:

  • It is safe to fire .500 JRH ammo in .500 S&W chambers.
  • It is safe to fire .480 Ruger in .475 Linebaugh chambers.
  • It is safe to fire .45 Long Colt in .454 Casull chambers.
  • It is safe to fire .45 Long Colt 2.5-inch and 3-inch .410 ammo as well as .410 slugs in our .45LC/410 revolvers. NOTE: when firing .45LC or .410 slugs the choke tube MUST be removed.
  • It is safe to fire .45 Long Colt and .454 Casull in the .460 S&W chambers; keeping in mind that the .45LC and .454 Casull are shorter than the .460 S&W.  Due to the shorter overall length the bullet has to travel a longer distance before entering the barrel.  The result is typically a loss in accuracy.

No other ammunition may be used in our BFR revolvers that are not marked on the revolver.

*All BFR's are shipped with MRI scope mount (Weaver style) included in packaging (except for .45LC/410) and are drilled and tapped for installation with screws supplied. New MRI scope mount may be purchased separately for previously owned BFR's sold by MRI before 12/31/03 (see scope mount section). Please note that your BFR revolver will need to be tapped and drilled in order for the scope mount to be attached - we can do this here at Magnum Research (you will need to ship us your revolver at your expense) or you may want to save on shipping costs and have a local competent gunsmith do this for you.
